What is special about travelling with Kampur Travel Diaries?

Kampur Travel Diaries is a family-owned and managed tour operator led by the co-founders, Kamal and Purvi. As a boutique company, they are able to offer a highly personalised service to their guests — from the very first enquiry message till the guests arrive back home.

Kamal and Purvi’s path into the travel industry didn’t follow a conventional script. He was a banker, and she trained and qualified in a traditional profession (Dentistry!), returned home to Kenya, and found herself building a business from the experiences she and her husband were already living on weekends.

Camping in far-flung corners of the country, they began sharing stories and routes on a travel blog, which ignited a steady stream of requests from friends and acquaintances who wanted to come along. The end result: the boutique Kenyan-owned safari company, Kampur Travel Diaries, focused on personalised, custom-designed trips.

“The more people who travel with us, the more we support other programs or projects. And that’s really the key of our business. And that’s why the name is Kampur Travel Diaries, but our motto is Adventure with a Cause.

Impact isn’t a side project in Kamal and Purvi’s work; it is the work. Travellers come for life-changing experiences; their journeys, in turn, help fund projects that change lives at home. It’s a full-circle design that makes “adventure with a cause” more than a tagline.

They prioritise slow travel, allowing guests to fully experience everything each destination has to offer — from its landscapes and wildlife to its food and culture (across East and Southern Africa). This also allows guests to not only enjoy the experience, but also have essential downtime that enhances their overall wellbeing and helps the trip to be transformational.

Kampur Travel Diaries also carefully selects accommodations with strong eco-friendly practices and close ties to local communities. They visit the places and accommodations they recommend, so their recommendations come from firsthand experience.

In addition, they collaborate with exceptional, highly experienced local guides to ensure every journey is deeply enriching.

What is the philosophy behind Kampur Travel Diaries?

At Kampur Travel Diaries, they know that travelling should not only enhance the life of the traveller, but should also leave the places and people they visit with a positive impact.

Their two main priorities are that the guests’ experiences exceed their expectations and that they are able to continue and grow their impact programs through the revenue we make. Initially, Kampur Travel Diaries started as a blog about the founders' travels to off-the-beaten-track places in Kenya. This blog led to people asking them to take them to those places.

At the same time, during their travels, they identified a need for stationery in schools in remote parts of Northern Kenya. They wanted to support the schools sustainably, but did not want to continually fundraise for this. This is where they intentionally decided to start organising trips to use revenue to purchase and distribute stationery to schools. Since then, the business has evolved to offer luxury, personalised trips for its guests based on their interests, and the community and conservation programs have evolved as well; it is actively involved in them.

The programs include stationery distribution to over 1000 school children in Northern Kenya, financially supporting a conservation education program that operates in 12 schools (and growing) in Maasai Mara through Mara Elephant Project, supporting the planting of indigenous trees to protect the habitat and biodiversity of an area which is home to endangered rhinos, paying the salary of a snake handler in the Tsavo region through Tsavo Trust, distribution of re-useable vacuum flasked water bottles and camelbaks to rangers and menstrual hygiene workshops and distribution of re-washable sanitary towels to girls to enable them not to have to take time off school.

They also believe that to truly understand and enjoy the places you visit, having a local guide who can share their stories is essential. This is why they have qualified guides on every trip booked through them.

What kind of trips does Kampur Travel Diaries offer?

Kampur Travel Diaries curates private trips based on their guests’ interests and what they want to experience. They also advise their guests about some of the more off-the-beaten-track destinations.

They regularly plan multi-generational travel, family trips, honeymoons and more. They do not offer set packages; they tailor the trip to what works best for the guests.

In East and Southern Africa, they offer safaris (in a variety of ways including jeep safaris, walking safaris, camel safaris, horseback safaris and more), indigenous cultural experiences, city experiences and culinary experiences.

In Egypt, Jordan and Morocco, the trips are focused on the history and the amazing ancient sites that exist, in addition to cultural, culinary and outdoor experiences. They also offer hiking trips depending on what the guests want to do.
