What unique features are incorporated in the Ekker Island Arctic Lodge?
Stay in Nature, Surrounded by History
There are four premium cabins—Snowbunting, White-tailed Eagle, Kittiwake, and Oystercatcher—named after the birds that return to Ekker Island and Varanger each spring. Designed by the renowned architectural firm Biotope, these cabins blend seamlessly into the Arctic landscape, with large windows facing the Varangerfjord, bringing nature right to your cozy indoor space.
For something different, stay in the Emelie House, a charming 1947 home full of history. Once the residence of Emelie, a mother of five and a pillar of the local community, it now offers a warm and homey stay with a kitchen, wood-fired stove, and views of the bird cliffs from the second floor.
Also, they offer two apartments in a former meeting house—a place of worship since 1911. These units are just a short walk from the main area and feature sea views on both sides, cozy interiors, full kitchens, and modern bathrooms. Right outside, you’ll find a sauna and direct access to the Barents Sea.
At the lodge, sustainability is at the heart of everything that the team does. They take recycling seriously and are constantly working to reduce our ecological footprint. By partnering with local suppliers, they not only support the community but also ensure that all operations remain rooted in the nature and culture around us. Every choice they make aims to protect this unique Arctic environment—for today and for the future.
»Our lodge is special—set right in the middle of wild nature, surrounded by Arctic birdlife and the cold, clear Varangerfjord. There’s no traffic here, just silence and the sound of the sea«

"We stayed at Ekkerøy Lodge in February and were blown away. The lodge is beautifully designed, with huge windows looking out over the frozen Varangerfjord. Everything was spotless and thoughtfully prepared—from the fresh coffee beans to the welcoming flowers. It’s the perfect base for seeing the Northern Lights in peace, far from tourist crowds."

"If you're looking for calm, this is it. The silence was only broken by the waves and the calls of seabirds. We spent our days walking the cliffs, watching wildlife, and enjoying long evenings by the fire. The lodge itself is modern yet cozy, with everything you need to feel at home. Highly recommend!"

"This was hands-down one of our favorite places we’ve ever stayed. The blend of luxury and wild nature is unlike anything else. We loved the sauna, the views, and the feeling of being completely off-grid while still having all the comforts. We’ll definitely be back!"
