Content of the Trail

When attending the Kalahari Primitive Trail, your time will be filled with exhilarating experiences and moments of profound tranquility. Departing from the lodge on the second day, a game drive will transport you to the trail's starting point. Led by seasoned Wilderness Trails Guides, you'll carry all necessary equipment in your backpack, including trail food. As you journey through the wilderness, you'll set your own pace, exploring according to your group's interests and abilities.

Each night, under the vast expanse of the stars and without tents, participants share 'watch duty', fostering moments of silence and self-reflection around the crackling campfire. The untouched beauty of the Kalahari offers both serenity and excitement, with encounters with iconic large mammals on foot adding to the adventure.

Arrival in the Kalahari

For the trip you will fly to O.R. Tambo International Airport, also referred to as Johannesburg International Airport. On the start date, departure from O.R. Tambo is at 7 am via road transfer to the !Khamab Kalahari Reserve, which typically takes seven to eight hours. You'll enjoy an overnight stay at a lodge, where dinner, bed, and breakfast are provided.

Accommodation and board

During the Kalahari Primitive Trail, your sleeping arrangements offer a unique experience. Before and after the trail, you'll stay one night in a lodge for comfort. However, once on the trail, you'll sleep under the stars in the wilderness without tents.

With no set routes or sleeping locations, each night is spent in untouched areas, sharing 'watch duty' responsibilities among participants. It's a chance to truly connect with nature and experience the tranquility of the Kalahari.

The region of !Khamab Kalahari Reserve

Situated in north-western South Africa, the !Khamab Kalahari Reserve lies within the Eastern Kalahari Bushveld Bioregion, a part of the Savanna Biome. Historically, it has been a significant destination for drought-forced migration due to its location along the Molopo River.

Covering 960 km², the Reserve encompasses diverse habitats including grassland, woodland, and shrubland, providing a rich environment for various plant and animal species.
