What unique features are incorporated in the Tekanda Lodge?

The Tekanda project is built on three interconnected pillars, embodying the founding belief that truly sustainable tourism must positively impact both the human and natural environments in which it operates.

1. Tekanda Lodge: A stunning boutique stay handcrafted from natural and sustainable materials, designed to offer guests a world-class experience deeply connected to its surroundings.

2. Tekanda Foundation: A rural empowerment centre that provides free vocational and educational classes throughout the year to over 250 adults and children from the nearby rural communities.

3. Tekanda Estate: A 10-acre organic property encompassing the lodge. This biodiverse estate blends tropical rainforest and jungle with traditional Sri Lankan agricultural practices and includes a two-acre botanical garden dedicated to preserving some of Sri Lanka’s most important native plants and trees.

Together, these three entities form a symbiotic relationship, each thriving as they support and nourish the others—creating a holistic model of sustainable tourism and community empowerment.

What activities are being offered at the Tekanda Lodge?

Tekanda Estate offers a variety of unique experiences that immerse guests in the beauty and culture of the region:

Guided tours showcase the organic agriculture and botanical gardens, while fishing and wildlife safaris on Lake Koggala provide opportunities to connect with local nature. Visitors can also explore Gamata Athak, the empowerment centre, to learn firsthand about the educational, vocational, and recreational programs benefiting the surrounding communities.

Additional experiences include swimming by moonlight alongside fireflies in the jungle pool and enjoying a private candlelit dinner on the lodge’s jungle deck, creating unforgettable moments in a serene setting.

»Hand-built with Sri Lankan iluk, Tekanda’s Lodge’s four rooms and two cabanas melt into the surrounding nature while its symphony of jungle sounds soothes the soul.«

Tekanda is an extraordinary place, lovingly run by Charlie and Richard.

The ambiance is very personal, designed with a huge attention to the detail. The food is delicious; the location in the middle of the jungle with amazing views and yet the beach and the city are only a 5 minutes drive away. The lodge is part of a broader overall concept - Charlie and Richard have set up an organic farm on their property producing organic cinnamon, tea, pepper, tropical fruit and vegetables and are also running a dedicated social project to help young people in Ahangama. Guests should bring respect for the place, people and the concept; Tekanda is more than a fancy boutique hotel.

We can't recommend the place enough.

The location is ideal, the place is quiet, the view is stunning, and the food was truly delicious. Our room was very spacious, beautifully designed, with thoughtful details that made our stay extra special. Charlie and Richard, as well as the entire staff, have an incredible energy and are super kind. They showed us the surf spots and recommended various activities. We loved everything about it and want to definitely come back!
