Our partner: Marataba

Welcome to Marataba – a volunteer program that offers the ultimate backstage pass to the inner workings of a modern-day conservation project.

Set against the stunning backdrop of one of South Africa’s most awe-inspiring landscapes, Marataba sits where the rugged Waterberg Massif meets the sweeping plains of the Kalahari system. The perennial Matlabas River winds its way through this incredible wonderland, creating the perfect environment for an unforgettable volunteer experience.

Marataba is not just a beautiful location – it is a biodiversity hotspot teeming with life. From the iconic Big 5 to over 300 bird species, as well as a vast array of plants and insects, this park is a treasure trove for nature enthusiasts.

Whether spotting elephants in the wild or observing the smallest of insects, every moment here offers an opportunity to connect with nature at its finest. As a volunteer, participants will dive straight into the action, joining the operations team in the daily tasks of managing this extraordinary protected area. No two days are ever alike!

Volunteers will engage in everything from hands-on conservation work to behind-the-scenes support. One day might involve tracking rhinos, while the next could see volunteers repairing park infrastructure. It’s all part of the adventure. By contributing to the program, volunteers will play a direct role in protecting endangered rhinos and supporting the local community.

This is more than just a volunteer opportunity - it’s a chance to make a tangible impact while living an unforgettable experience. For those ready to roll up their sleeves and leave their mark on conservation, Marataba is waiting for you!

What is the philosophy behind Marataba?

The philosophy behind Marataba is rooted in the harmonious balance between conservation, community, and sustainability, with a vision to create a lasting impact on both the natural world and the people connected to it. This philosophy reflects a deep commitment to preserving biodiversity, fostering human-nature connections, and inspiring future generations. Here are the key pillars:

1. Conservation as a collective responsibility

Marataba believes that true conservation requires active participation and collaboration. From protecting endangered species like rhinos to restoring fragile ecosystems, the park embraces a forward-thinking approach to managing wildlife and habitats. This includes innovative techniques like habitat restoration, population management, and fostering biodiversity within a stunning natural landscape.

2. Community-centered approach

Marataba understands that the well-being of the surrounding communities is intricately linked to the success of conservation. Its philosophy emphasizes the need to empower local communities through education, job creation, and sustainable opportunities. Programs like vegetable gardens at schools, skills training, and volunteer initiatives foster a sense of ownership and pride while addressing critical social challenges.

3. Sustainability as a long-term vision

Marataba operates with a focus on sustainability - not just for the reserve itself but for the broader conservation and community efforts. By creating self-sustaining models, such as responsible eco-tourism and volunteer programs, Marataba aims to generate revenue that directly supports both conservation initiatives and community development, ensuring that the mission continues for generations to come.

»At first, you might think your work isn’t that important, only to soon discover you're playing a crucial role in preserving Mother Nature, and in doing so, finding yourself.«
- Marie-Claire Greve, Founder Marataba Volunteer Experience

4. Nature as an educator

Marataba’s philosophy celebrates nature as the ultimate teacher. Programs like the Marataba Volunteer Experience encourage participants to reconnect with the environment, inspiring personal growth and an appreciation for the interconnectedness of all life. This belief in the transformative power of nature is woven into every initiative, from volunteer programs to conservation effort

5. Leading by example

Marataba strives to be a best-practice model for other reserves, demonstrating that conservation and community development can coexist and thrive. By inspiring others in the fields of biodiversity management, sustainable development, and community upliftment, Marataba hopes to spark a ripple effect across Africa and beyond.

At its core, Marataba’s philosophy is about coexistence, stewardship, and legacy - leaving behind a world where people and nature thrive together. It’s a call to action, inviting individuals to be part of something bigger, to protect what matters, and to create a better future for the planet.
