Are you ready to get involved in environmental protection in Costa Rica? Then immerse yourself in the Pérez Zeledón forest conservation project! Here you have the chance to volunteer and gain practical insights into the reforestation and protection of this fascinating ecosystem.

Experience first-hand the progress of the forest through reforestation and explore the steep slopes of the reserve while enjoying the breathtaking views of valleys and waterfalls. Work with an international team of researchers and like-minded volunteers who are passionate about biodiversity conservation. Whether you are a biology enthusiast, an environmental activist, or simply love nature, this project in a Costa Rican reserve allows you to actively contribute to forest conservation and spend between two and twelve weeks on site.

During your stay, you will support budding scientists with their research projects, help with the maintenance of hiking trails or the reserve, with construction projects, or with looking after guests. Even science students can write their Bachelor's or Master's thesis here and gain a broad insight into the fields of nature conservation and forest recreation. Be part of this inspiring mission and discover how you can have a positive impact on the forests of Costa Rica!

Your activities to protect forests

Experience a week full of variety and commitment to the nature conservation project! As a volunteer, you will be involved in a variety of tasks that focus on nature conservation, education, and research. Your days will start with supporting science projects and analysing different forest species. You will care for trees, gardens, and buildings in the reserve and greet guests in the Welcome Centre, where you will impart knowledge.

Two days a week you will support the staff with trail maintenance or construction work. The last two days are dedicated to field work, lab work, and data entry. You will typically work 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, with weekends off. Discover your passion for nature conservation and experience an enriching week in the heart of nature!

Arrival in Pérez Zeledón

After your arrival at Juan Santamaría International Airport in San José or Tobías Bolaños International Airport in Pavas, we recommend that you spend a night in a hotel or hostel so that you arrive rested. Most volunteers make a stopover, which makes the journey more relaxed. The next day, you can take a taxi and then a bus to San Gerardo. A member of staff will pick you up there and take you to the reserve. The pick-up in San Gerardo is included in the booking. After your arrival at the reserve, you will receive a briefing and be included in the weekly programme.

»I particularly enjoyed the walks in the countryside with the views and the many different animals.«
- Lennart (former participant)

Accommodation and board

During your stay, you will be accommodated in simple, communal accommodation directly on the reserve. You will live in 2- to 8-person dormitories with bunk beds, which are cleaned by the staff every morning. Being part of the community also means that you will be tasked with cleaning and recycling chores like everyone else. If you prefer private accommodation, there are two independent small houses available for an extra charge. These offer a full kitchen, a terrace, a private bathroom and a double bed, but have limited availability.

You are responsible for your own catering and can use one of the two kitchens. The cost of food and cooking is up to you. Most volunteers can prepare a simple, mostly vegetarian meal for around €5 per day. Once a week, transport is organised to the nearest larger town to buy groceries. The drinking water comes from pure mountain springs and is treated by a filter. Most people have no problems with this. Every Monday there is a "potluck" where everyone cooks a dish to share with others. On most Sunday mornings there is a communal brunch in San Gerardo, where all volunteers and scientists can take part.

Leisure time during the project

The nearest village is within walking distance, where you can discover local restaurants and bars. In the evenings, you can catch up with family and friends on the phone, write emails, play cards or experience the sounds of nature around you while watching a film or reading a book from the library.

At the weekends, popular beaches and hiking trails provide the perfect backdrop for nature lovers. Explore the rich flora and fauna of the region - also together with other volunteers. You can also swim in the reserve's river or hike to the nearby hot springs to relax. Organise yourself with other volunteers to plan excursions and activities together and create unforgettable experiences.

The region of Pérez Zeledón

Pérez Zeledón, the nineteenth canton of the province of San José in Costa Rica, is home to the capital San Isidro de El General, which lies at 702 metres above sea level. Nature lovers will find hiking trails through picturesque highlands and blossoming valleys. Numerous paths criss-cross the wilderness and reveal waterfalls, rivers, and breathtaking views. The steep terrain and high altitude can be physically demanding, especially at the beginning as you acclimatise to the thinner air. However, the spectacular views and the variety of birds, plants, and animals make every effort worthwhile!
