Topics and activities of your volunteering trip

Your time on Kefalonia island is an opportunity to immerse yourself in hands-on sea turtle conservation efforts while gaining invaluable skills and contributing to vital research. Depending on the season, tasks range from patrolling the beaches at sunrise to identify turtle nests and tracks, to nighttime patrols to observe and record nesting behavior. You'll play a crucial role in monitoring nests, ensuring the safe hatching and journey to the sea for the hatchlings.

In addition to beach patrols, you'll participate in beach clean-ups, assist with sea turtle tagging, rescue injured turtles, monitor light pollution, conduct behavioral research, and assess plastic pollution. These activities are essential for the protection and preservation of Kefalonia's sea turtle population.

Your involvement in these activities not only contributes to the immediate conservation efforts but also fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation for the delicate balance of marine ecosystems. It's a hands-on experience that leaves a lasting impact, both on the turtles and the environment they inhabit.

Arrival and orientation in Kefalonia

You have two primary transportation options to reach the field stations in Lixouri or Argostoli.

The first option involves flying directly to Kefalonia International Airport (EFL). Upon arrival, a staff member will greet you at the airport and transport you to either the Argostoli field station, a mere five minutes away, or to the ferry port. From there, you can embark on a 25-minute ferry ride to Lixouri for a nominal fee of €3.

Alternatively, you can opt to fly to Athens International Airport (ATH). Upon landing, you can catch a brief bus ride (bus X93) from the airport to the Kifisou bus station. From Kifisou, a 6–7-hour bus journey to Argostoli or Lixouri awaits, with a fare of approximately €45 each way, which includes your ferry ticket. Upon arrival in Argostoli, a staff member will be waiting to transport you to the field station. If you arrive at the Lixouri bus station, a staff member will meet you there and accompany you on a short walk to the house, approximately 5 minutes away.

Accommodation and board

At both project sites, you'll be housed alongside fellow international volunteers in gender-specific dormitories. Each dorm-style room features two bunk beds accommodating a total of four individuals, along with a convenient kitchenette for meal preparation. While volunteers in Lixouri enjoy proximity to dining options in the town center, those in Argostoli primarily rely on grocery shopping for meals. Additionally, both accommodations offer laundry facilities for a nominal fee of €3 and shared bathrooms equipped with solar-heated water, including a sink, shower, and toilet.

There is no air conditioning, but there are ceiling fans in every room, and volunteers have reported that it is cool enough to sleep comfortably at night.

Leisure time during the project

During your stay, you'll have ample opportunities to immerse yourself in the splendor of Kefalonia. Whether you're drawn to its historical sites, tranquil beaches, or charming towns, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Each week, you'll have one to two days off to explore at your leisure, with your schedule provided at the beginning of the week for planning purposes.
