Nature Conservation Kauri Coast, New Zealand

Join the volunteer program on New Zealand’s stunning Kauri Coast and immerse yourself in the pristine beauty of its rainforests while contributing to vital conservation efforts. Based at a cozy accommodation on the edge of a woodland, you'll work across four unique forests, engaging in activities like kiwi monitoring, trap installation, seed collection, weed control, building maintenance, and data entry.

Weekly excursions offer opportunities to explore the region further, from rainforest safaris to beach walks. As part of a dedicated team, you'll help protect endangered species, experience off-the-grid living, and gain practical experience, making a meaningful impact on New Zealand’s unique ecosystem.

Activities of volunteering in Nature Conservation at Kauri Coast

As a volunteer, you'll join an international volunteer team, guided by experienced supervisors. On Tuesday, you'll learn about New Zealand's unique nature and conservation challenges, get introduced to the forest, and receive training in navigation and radio use. Your tasks will include kiwi, kokako, and rodent monitoring, trap installation, seed collection, and base maintenance.

Additionally, you'll participate in activities like setting up fences, landscaping, and maintaining the herb garden. You'll also enjoy weekly nature excursions to explore New Zealand’s landscapes and wildlife with your team. University students can gain practical experience or support for their thesis projects.

Arrival and orientation

Project start is always on a Monday. Arrive at Auckland International Airport (AKL) on Sunday and spend the night in the city. On Monday morning, take a public bus to Whangarei, where our partner’s transfer will pick you up and take you to the project site.

Upon arrival, you'll settle in, meet your team, and receive an overview of important rules and your upcoming tasks, preparing you for a rewarding conservation experience at Kauri Coast.

Accommodation and board

As a volunteer, you'll stay on the sanctuary grounds at the edge of a forest on the Kauri Coast. This remote location offers a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with nature. Accommodation includes several cabins with a kitchen, sanitary facilities, dining room, and outside area. You'll sleep in a shared room with bunk beds.

Three meals per day are provided, which you'll help prepare, along with drinking water, tea, hot chocolate, and coffee. Note: Electricity and running water are unavailable, but solar panels and heated water are provided.

Leisure time

As a volunteer, you'll have leisure time in the evenings and a full day off, usually on Monday. To help you recharge after a week of hard conservation work, our partner offers various relaxation activities showcasing New Zealand's beauty.

Enjoy safaris to explore the rainforest's magical wildlife, swimming trips to a nearby lake, beach walks, and mountain climbs. These excursions provide a perfect balance between work and relaxation, allowing you to fully appreciate the stunning Kauri Coast.
