Volunteers engage in comprehensive monitoring and conservation efforts on North Island, focusing on sea turtle populations like the Green and Hawksbill species. Daily beach patrols, including night patrols during nesting seasons, are conducted to monitor nesting activities and address threats to nests. Additionally, activities include excavating hatched turtle nests and relocating nests at risk of erosion. Monitoring of the Aldabra Giant Tortoise population involves recording GPS locations for territory identification and movement patterns across the island. Rehabilitation of endemic vegetation is prioritized through various tasks such as removing coconut seedlings, cultivating seedlings in nurseries, planting indigenous trees, and clearing alien vegetation.

Seabird populations, particularly the Wedge-tailed Shearwater and White-tailed Tropicbird, are monitored when needed, and snorkeling activities contribute to compiling a photographic database of reef fish. Arrival and orientation

For a seamless arrival experience, it's recommended to arrive at Mahé Airport a day prior to the project's official start date. Upon arrival, a designated driver will transfer you to your pre-booked accommodation near the airport, providing initial information about the following day en route. Alternatively, if arriving on the project's start date, you'll be greeted at the airport and transported accordingly. The next morning, you'll be picked up from your accommodation and escorted to the ferry station for a 60-minute journey to North Island.

Upon arrival, your luggage will undergo thorough checks for invasive species before being transported to the volunteer house. Here, you'll settle in, receive your volunteer uniform, and acquaint yourself with the project leaders, who will provide details about accommodation, dining, and daily activities. The first day includes a beach patrol led by project leaders, during which you'll collect debris and search for turtle tracks, followed by orientation on additional tasks for the day.

Accommodation and board

Your home base on North Island situates you near the staff village, nestled in the centre of the small island. Accommodation is provided in the volunteer house, shared with three other participants, and featuring two bedrooms, a cosy living room, and a communal bathroom.

Meals are served together in the staff canteen, offering three basic meals daily. Before dinner, snacks can be purchased four times a week from the staff shop, with access to a shared fridge in the EcoHouse. While the Environment Office provides WiFi access for email, it's reserved solely for essential communication purposes.

Leisure time in paradise

Participants should anticipate a six-day work week, with Fridays designated as a rest day. During leisure time, the island provides abundant opportunities to retreat to secluded areas, offering peaceful solitude far from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Surfboards, paddleboards, and kayaks are available for daily use after 4pm at the guest beach, subject to availability when there are no island guests present. Adjacent to the north coast lies a vast coral reef teeming with mesmerizing marine life, perfect for snorkeling or diving adventures.
