Immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscape of Alberta in Canada and become part of a team of spirited animal welfare activists! In this volunteer project, you will help protect and care for horses rescued from poor conditions. From grooming to medical care, you will support the horse ranch in all areas.

The protégés are victims of neglect or overbreeding, some even come from the PMU industry. Participants without horse experience can also get involved, be it in the care of other animals or with administrative tasks. Start your volunteer service in Alberta and spend between eight and twelve weeks on site.

Activities during your time as a volunteer

As a volunteer in this project, you will be involved in all daily tasks on the horse ranch. Experienced horse handlers can get involved in grooming, feeding and handling the animals. However, riding is not part of the activities. There is also the opportunity to support the process of taking in new horses or to attend medical treatments.

For volunteers with no experience of horses, there are tasks such as feeding other animals, cleaning and maintenance work as well as administrative tasks on the ranch grounds. The project tasks vary depending on the previous knowledge and experience of the volunteers, with participants with equine experience mainly assisting with the care and handling of horses.

Arrival and orientation in Alberta

Your journey begins when you land at Calgary International Airport, where a member of the local team is already waiting for you. Together you will make your way to the horse ranch. There is usually a stop at a supermarket on this journey, where you can stock up on some groceries.

Once you arrive at the ranch, you can relax and get to know your new team. Here you will have the opportunity to find out more about the project, its goals and the tasks that await you.

»I have particularly positive memories of the fact that you can be involved in many things that happen on the farm (for example visits to the vet). This gives you a great overview of life on the farm.«
- Anna

Accommodation and board

In the middle of the unspoilt nature of southern Alberta, just an hour and a half drive north of Calgary, lies the horse ranch of our project. Together with other volunteers, you will be accommodated in a cosy guest house on the ranch grounds - there will be a maximum of four of you. You will have two shared rooms, a bathroom and a small, fully equipped kitchen at your disposal.

Here you can prepare your own meals or, if you like, cook together with the other volunteers. The ranch staff organise regular trips to the nearby town so that you can buy groceries.
